Professor Gugu Mchunu

Professor Gugu Mchunu is the current Executive Dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). She holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Nursing), M Nursing (University of Natal), a Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing Education and Management and a PhD in Health Sciences (UKZN). She has worked in various places including in the Northern Cape, as an Occupational Health Nurse and as a Primary Care Nurse. Her academic career spans from year 2000 when she joined the then University of Natal as a Junior lecturer and progressed to become the UKZN Head of Nursing Department from 2013 till 2019. She has served as an Executive Director of the Durban Chamber Foundation, a Senior Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Prof Mchunu has received a number of prestigious scholarships including The Ford Foundation International Scholarship Program and spent some time at the Johns Hopkins University, USA as a visiting scholar.

She has widely published her research, with more than 50 research papers in peer reviewed journals. Her research focus area is on Heath Promotion strategies in the Minibus Taxi Industry – focusing on topics such as HIV/AIDS, Food Security, Gender Based Violence in this sector. She has had membership in various bodies such as:

  • The co-founding member for Action in Autism – an organization for people with Autism
  • A Chairperson of SHAHUMNA Board of Directors for Action in Autism Centre
  • KwaZulu-Natal College of Nursing Council and Senate

  • Forum for the University Deans in South Africa (FUNDISA)
  • Country Advisory Committee (CAC) for the HealthRise™ Program in South Africa
  • The WHO Collaborating Centre for Midwifery  as a Deputy Director
  • Transformation Committee in the College of Health Sciences
